Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for Beauty

~

„And yet, there is always an undercurrent of restlessness and wild longing; ‚the wind is in my hair, there’s a fire in my heels,‘ and I shall always be a rover, I know.“

„You do not know how ridiculous life is unless you have had strange experiences and seen the ineffable absurdity of it all.“

„It seems that only in moments of desperation is the soul most truly revealed. Perhaps that’s why I am so often so unrestrained, for always I sense the brink of things. And as you say, it is impossible to grasp enough of life. There is always something that eludes one.“

„I thought that there were two rules in life – never count the cost, and never do anything unless you can do it wholeheartedly.“

„Why muck and conceal one’s true longings and loves, when by speaking of them one might find someone to understand them, and by acting on them one might discover one’s self? It is true that in the world such a lack of reserve usually meets with hostility, misunderstanding and scorn. Here in isolation I need not fear on that score.“

[Die Legende des Aussteigers und Vagabunden Everett Ruess war mir schon öfter begegnet. Jon Krakauer erwähnt Everett zum Beispiel in Into the Wild, seinem Buch über Chris McCandless.

[Oder die Leiche wurde doch nicht gefunden: Remains found in Utah are not those of vagabond artist, Everett Ruess.]
